The scene as depicted here is after a print by Giorgio Ghisi that probably dates from around 1556–7 and was ultimately influenced by a work by Raphael. For the ornamental components of the decoration Courteys has drawn inspiration from a range of sources, including published designs by Étienne Delaune and Baltazar Sylvius.
