“The most brilliant of all Baroque Portriats” – everyone.
Well we’re only half joking. The Cavalier is another our best-known and most-loved residents with his extravagantly embroidered outfit layered with ruffs and cuffs, tight-lipped grin and smirking eyes. The sitter of Hals portrait remains unknown and it’s current title was a combined invention by the British Press and a catalogue listing on it’s arrival to the Bethnal Green Museum (now the V&A’s Museum of Childhood) for a public exhibition in the 1870s.
